Yann LeCun is Executive Chairman of AMI Labs, a Paris-based startup building AI for the real world, and the Jacob T. Schwartz Professor at New York University. He founded Facebook AI Research in 2013 and was Meta’s Chief AI Scientist from 2018 until January 2026, when he left to lead AMI Labs. Earlier, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1988 and NYU in 2003, where he was founding director of the Center for Data Science.
He is best known for the convolutional network, now standard in computer vision and speech recognition, and received the 2018 ACM Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio. He founded ICLR and is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the French Académie des Sciences. His honors include the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award, the 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize and the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
// 02 / The session
World models and what comes after LLMs
Abstract
Andrew Ng and Yann LeCun discuss where AI research is heading and what it means for developers: the limits of current models, world models and planning, the role of open models, and which skills will still matter as the tools change.
What you’ll learn
Where current language models fall short, from a researcher who helped build the field
What world models and planning could change for developers
Why open models matter for the ecosystem
